Our ecosystems face countless threats every single day. Deforestation, overfishing, bottom trawling, mining, pollution, coastal development… the list goes on. So much of nature is being exploited for profit, with little respect for the balance that keeps these ecosystems alive.

I’m not saying shell collecting has no impact. Of course, anything we remove from nature has some effect. The question is how it’s done, how much is taken, and whether it’s done with knowledge, respect, and a commitment to give back.

At the same time, many local communities depend on the ocean to survive. They aren’t necessarily driven by greed—they’re often trying to earn a living with the opportunities they have. That’s why education, awareness, and sustainable alternatives are just as important as conservation itself.

If we truly want to protect our oceans, we need to look at the bigger picture. Not just one person, one shell, or one practice—but all the pressures our marine ecosystems face every day. 🌊🐚

It’s always interesting to me how much outrage shell collecting can trigger, while some of the actual large-scale environmental destruction happening right now barely gets talked about.

People will see a few empty shells and suddenly act like that’s the biggest threat to the ocean — while staying strangely quiet about the industries that are systematically destroying entire ecosystems at a scale most people can’t even imagine.

We’re talking about:
• massive deforestation for timber, development, cattle, soy, and palm oil

• palm oil plantations replacing biodiverse rainforest with monocultures

• mining that tears apart landscapes, poisons rivers, and displaces both wildlife and local communities

• offshore oil drilling and extraction, with spills, pollution, and long-term marine damage

• industrial overfishing that empties oceans far more effectively than any individual ever could

• bottom trawling / sea-bottom dragging, which literally bulldozes the seafloor, destroys coral, seagrass, and marine habitats, and kills huge amounts of non-target species

• deep-sea mining, where companies are now trying to industrialize some of the least understood ecosystems on Earth for metals and minerals

• coastal development that destroys mangroves, reefs, nesting sites, and fragile shorelines

• plastic pollution and chemical runoff entering rivers and oceans every day

• and a global economic system built on extracting, clearing, dredging, drilling, shipping, burning, and consuming more and more, faster and faster

That’s not even getting into coral bleaching, habitat destruction, freshwater contamination, species collapse, illegal wildlife trade, or the way entire communities are forced to live with the consequences of environmental decisions made for profit somewhere else.

So yes, I do find it strange when people direct all their moral energy toward someone collecting a naturally washed-up shell, while saying very little about the industries clearing forests, dragging nets across the seafloor, drilling into oceans, poisoning water systems, and turning living ecosystems into commodities. Some fun facts about giant clam shells:

1. After the juvenile stage, giant clams attach themselves to a reef and can remain in the same spot for decades. Some can live for around a century. So a giant clam shell on an Indonesian reef may have been sitting in that exact patch of reef longer than several human generations.

2. The true giant clam, Tridacna gigas, is the largest living bivalve on Earth. It can grow to around 1.3 meters (over 4 feet) and weigh 200+ kg. So those giant white shells you sometimes see used as decor in tropical places are not just “big shells” — they can come from one of the largest mollusks on the planet.

3. There’s a long myth that giant clams can trap divers. In reality, they close too slowly to “catch” a person, and there’s no good evidence of giant clams killing swimmers. They’re dramatic, not murderous.
